Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of vit D deficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Treatment of vit D deficiency Adult 7.5 mL (6,000 IU) daily for 8 wk, followed by 2-2.5 mL (1,600-2,000 IU) daily. Elderly ≥70 yr Recommended daily allowance: 800 IU daily. Ped ≥1 yr 2.5 mL (2,000 IU) daily for 6-8 wk, followed by 0.75-1.25 mL (600-1,000 IU) daily, ≤1 yr 2.5 mL (2,000 IU) daily for 6 wk, followed by 0.5-1.25 mL (400-1,000 IU) daily. Prevention of vit D deficiency Adult 2-2.5 mL (1,600-2,000 IU) daily. Ped 0.5 mL (400 IU) daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypervitaminosis D; nephrolithiasis; diseases or conditions resulting in hypercalcaemia &/or hypercalciuria. Severe renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Not for prolonged use. Risk of soft tissue calcification. Patients w/ CV disease receiving treatment; sarcoidosis. Monitor Ca content in serum & urine; effect on Ca & phosphate levels in patients w/ renal impairment. Consider other forms of vit D in patients w/ severe renal insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypercalcaemia & hypercalciurea, headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, cardiac arrhythmias, pruritus, rash & urticaria.
Drug Interactions
Decreased effect w/ phenytoin or barbiturates; glucocorticoids. Cardiac arrhythmias w/ cardiac glycosides. Reduced GI absorption w/ ion exchange resins eg, cholestyramine or laxatives eg, paraffin oil. Interference of activity w/ actinomycin & imidazole antifungals.
